Dear Students
Welcome to the DAV Family! Officially registered with the Ministry of Education (MOE) in 1957, we have since grown from a
handful of students to over 4000 today. This has been due to the hard work and dedication of our teachers, supervisors and
management staff as well as the support of MOE and all the national schools that partner us.
The Legacy of DAV Hindi School Singapore
- The Dayanand Anglo-Vedic (DAV) School is named in honor of Swami Dayanand Saraswati, the visionary founder of the Arya Samaj movement in India. Swami Dayanand, a prominent 19th-century Hindu reformer, championed the transformative power of education as the key to social upliftment. His belief in providing education to all, regardless of religion, caste, or gender, was revolutionary in a time when educating women and marginalized communities was uncommon in India. His commitment to inclusive education laid the foundation for what would become the largest network of schools across India today—a testament to his enduring legacy.
- In the early 20th century, as Indian communities migrated to Southeast Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, Mauritius, and Fiji, they carried with them Swami Dayanand’s ideals of education and social reform. The Arya Samaj was established in Singapore in 1927, and by 1930, its members had initiated Hindi and English classes under the DAV banner, continuing Swami Dayanand's vision in the diaspora.
The Birth of DAV Hindi School Singapore
- As Singapore progressed, the demand for Hindi education grew, particularly as publicly funded English-medium education became the norm in the 1950s. At the time, Hindi was not part of the mainstream curriculum in Singapore’s public schools, prompting the local Hindi-speaking community to push for formal education in the language. In response to this need, DAV Hindi School was officially registered in 1957.
- However, the school initially faced challenges due to limited facilities. Determined community members led fundraising efforts that eventually secured the resources to lay the foundation for a three-story building at Syed Alwi Road in 1963. Despite these efforts, the number of students studying Hindi remained modest until a significant policy change in 1989, when then-Minister for Education Dr. Tony Tan announced that Hindi could be offered as a Second Language for the GCE “O” Level examinations. This policy shift revitalized interest in learning Hindi, marking a pivotal moment in the school’s growth.
Remarkable Growth and Cultural Impact
- Since the year 2000, DAV Hindi School Singapore has experienced remarkable growth. From a modest 150 students, the school now serves over 3,600 students across nine centres and more than 40 parallel schools throughout Singapore. With a dedicated team of 130 teachers and 10 full-time administrators, DAV Hindi School has not only become the oldest Hindi school in Singapore but also a leading institution for teaching Hindi as a mother tongue.
- What sets DAV Hindi School apart is its commitment to holistic and values-based education. Students at DAV are not only taught Hindi but are also immersed in Indian culture and traditions. Through participation in cultural festivals, music, dance, drama, and the learning of classical Indian instruments, students develop a deep appreciation for their heritage. At DAV, the focus is on fostering friendships, strengthening cultural roots, and cultivating a love for learning. This commitment ensures that every student’s journey with Hindi is enriching, joyful, and meaningful.
